Commas in Dates and Addresses

A date may consist of several parts: the day of the week, the month and the day, and the year. Notice in the following date where commas appear:

Sunday, December 21, 1999

Addresses, too, may consist of several parts: the number and the street, the city, and the country sometimes. Look at this address:

81 Tran Hung Dao Street, Ha Noi, Vietnam.

After writing the first part of either a date or an address, put a comma both before and after each additional part.

Date: October 25, 1970, is the birthday of my uncle.
Address: We have been living at 81 Tran Hung Dao Street, Hoan Kiem District, Ha Noi, for many years.

Note: If an address follows a name directly without preposition like at, in or on, tie it in with the sentence, even a one-part address must be set off with commas.

Take your car to the Hue Garage at 240 Tran Binh Trong Street for a repair job. (In this sentence at ties in the address – no commas needed)

Take your car to the Hue Garage, 240 Tran Binh Trong Street for a repair job. (In this sentence at is omitted – commas needed)
