APRIL IS COUNSELING AWARENESS MONTH
In recognition of Counseling Awareness Month, The Wellness Corporation would like to provide you with answers to some common questions about counseling and the counseling process. The decision to seek help through counseling is a difficult one. The more familiar you are with the process, the more likely you are to pick up that phone and call for help when the need arises.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK COUNSELING?
Throughout the life cycle, there are times when life circumstances can be overwhelming. Most of us can deal with the stresses and difficulties of life most of the time. However, all of us, if we are exposed to enough stress or a variety of stresses over a long enough period of time, will eventually break down. Our usual coping strategies will no longer work and we may develop symptoms of depression or anxiety. We may find ourselves experiencing some or all of the following problems: sleep difficulties, reduced capacity to concentrate at our jobs, racing thoughts, increased tension, anxiety or irritability. Over time, if left unresolved, these problems may evolve into serious psychiatric disorders.
Life stressors can include: the loss of a loved one, medical illness (our own or a family member's), job loss or change, family, and marital conflicts.
Because over time small problems can develop into larger problems, it is important that we address our problems and find new ways to overcome them. Problems are always more easily addressed earlier rather than later. Counseling can help!
WHAT IS PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING?
Counselors work with individuals, couples, and groups. They work in a collaborative fashion with their clients, defining problems and problem solution strategies, supporting and encouraging personal growth and change. Counseling is not just for individuals with psychiatric or emotional disorders. It is also for those who are facing normal life stresses and problems, and who would like to make use of the help and guidance available through the process. Many are relieved in speaking with a counselor to determine that they are not "going crazy" and that their feelings and thoughts are normal ones for the circumstances in which they find themselves.
WHO ARE PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS?
Counselors receive professional training through a variety of programs. Counseling and clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, and psychiatric nurse clinicians all are trained and licensed to provide counseling. Your EAP can recommend a counselor for you who is expert in the problem area that you are facing. All EAP counselors are licensed and credentialed and all have at least 5 years of counseling experience.
